Young People's Programme
The Young People's Programme is the overall title used to refer to Making Music's work with and for young people. Making Music has pledged in our current strategic plan Five Years Five Aims, to help our member organisations flourish; to be as successful as they can be at what they do artistically, organisationally and in their relationship with their local community and particularly with young people.

Building on the successes of the Resound Programme in Scotland and England (2005-07) we want to investigate more about what we can do to encourage young people to make all kinds of music across the UK.

Working in partnership with organisations such as Youth Music and ENYAN (the English National Youth Arts Network) as well as the Scottish Arts Council and their Youth Music Initiative, we are finding out what young people can offer our members and vice versa; what the benefits are to members of working with young people; what kind of music do young people want to be making around the country; and what structures we can create to best provide new opportunities for music making for young people, particularly those who would not readily have any access to live music.

With the publication of its first two reports, the launch of Musical Futures regional co-ordinators and all the other events happening under the auspices of the Music Manifesto, now is a vibrant and exciting time to be engaging young people in all kinds of music making. The Music Manifesto website has lots more detail about what is happening, as well as useful publications to download.

Publications and Guidance

Click here for a summary of Making Music Youth Activity from 1999-2005.

Our 'How To...' Guide on working with young people covers all these points in more detail and can be downloaded in pdf format by members of Making Music in the members' area of this site. This guide also gives important information about CRB checks for those working with children and young people, as well as references and links to other relevant Making Music 'How To...' Guides and Information Sheets. Finally there is a list of other organisations who can provide more information and advice on working with young people.

Through Making Music's Young People's Programme a substantial library of youth project case studies has been developed.

These case studies are designed to highlight and share best practice from the experiences of Making Music member groups undertaking youth projects.

Click here to browse over 60 case studies of youth projects Making Music Members have planned, developed and grown from.

Help and Advice

Further help and advice on working with young people is available to all Making Music members from the Making Music's office. By pooling the experience and knowledge in this way, it is possible for any member group within membership of Making Music to have access to opportunities to initiate activities with young people.

Making Music with young people can be very rewarding, stimulating and fun. Think creatively and see how you can work with the younger members of your community, not as the audience or participants of tomorrow, but of today.
