London Forest Choir
The London Forest Choir was established in 1950 in Walthamstow, North East London, where it has been based ever since. As well as performing regularly, both locally and in central London, the Choir has undertaken a number of foreign tours, most recently to Italy in June 2004.

Mr Michael Pitwood spoke to Making Music about the Equal Opportunities (EO) Award:

Why did you decide to approach the issue of equal opportunities with your choir?

The choir applied because the award was there. Fortuitously they saw it promoted in Making Music News just before their annual AGM.

How did you find the application process?

The application was relatively simple. Because the London Forest Choir already had an EO policy in place, it was easy to apply.

How do you use the Positive About Equal Opportunities Logo?

The choir uses the logo from time to time on concert programmes, but space is an issue, and they already have to include their own logo and the MM logo. The EO logo is always displayed on their annual brochure and on their notice board. They have not used it for funding applications yet.

How do you think considering Equal Opportunities benefits your choir?

The choir is currently looking for a new rehearsal venue and are considering Equal Opportunities in areas such as access, amenities and location.

Are there any comments you would like to make about the Award and the application process?

The choir found that the questions 'how do you know which venues conform' and 'how do you know which 'reasonable steps' should be taken?' were difficult for societies to answer. We answered based on research with the bodies which run the venues they use, but it was not a simple process. We wondered if it were possible for Making Music to offer more guidance about this question.

Choir member Mr Hywel Davies wrote the Society's Equal Opportunities Policy, which is used by Making Music as an example for other choirs.   The process of receiving the EO award helped LMO develop a new procedure for finding and auditioning new members.
Bishopwearmouth Choral Society   Sprotbrough Music Society
The choir made sure that their performance venue was accessible by replacing the staging to accommodate the elder members.   This group is one of only two Promoting members among Making Music to receive the Positive About Equal Opportunities Award.
