James Willshire began his musical studies at the age of nine and two years later entered Chetham's School of Music where he studied with Heather Slade-Lipkin. At 15 he was a prize-winner in the 2000 World Piano Competition (London) and was awarded an Educational Scholarship for a short period of study in Paris with the French pianist Dominique Merlet.
In 2002 James won a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he studies with Joan Havill, and where he has won a number of important prizes. In 2005 he won both the Liszt Prize and the McCallum Prize for the Most Promising Young Pianist in the Piano Section of the Royal Overseas League Competition. James has been awarded scholarships by The Countess of Munster Musical Trust, the Martin Musical Scholarship Fund and the Julius Isserlis Scholarship. In 2006 he won the piano section of the Tunbridge Wells International Young Concert Artists Competition and was a prize-winner in the 2007 Scottish International Piano Competition.
As a recitalist and concerto soloist James has performed throughout the UK, France, Spain, the Ukraine and Russia, has broadcast on Indian national radio, and has participated in the Lichfield, Edinburgh and Cheltenham festivals. He has performed with the Ensemble of London and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. James has given concerts at the Barbican Hall, broadcast on the Performance Channel, and has performed in the Paxos International Music Festival. Future engagements include concert series in Spain and South Africa.
