Making Music Lady Hilary Groves Prize 2007
Vivienne Bellos LRAM ARCM
Vivienne's contribution to the musical life of the community and the locality has been remarkable since she joined the North Western Reform Synagogue in 1980 as Director of Music. Shortly after this she founded the Alyth Choral Society in 1982.

She established a thriving young children's choir who have, under her superb guidance, grown from strength to strength. They have performed in Trafalgar Square, The Roundhouse, and at the Victoria and Albert Museum as part of the Celebration of Light in November 2006. Vivienne also established the Alyth Youth Singers, who have appeared at many festival celebrations within the community as well as performing in London, Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels and Israel.

The High Holydays and Synagogue choirs, trained and conducted by Vivienne enhance the spirituality of the community's religious services. Over the years new music has been commissioned to bring new life to the traditional readings of psalms and prayers. They also often sing at wedding services and ordination services for newly qualified Rabbis.

Vivienne's concerts have raised funds for numerous charities including The North London Hospice, Malcolm Sergeant Cancer Fund, Norwood, JAMI (Jewish Association for the mentally ill), Cancer Research UK and The Teenage Cancer Trust. This in itself expands on the joys of music making for all those involved.

Vivienne has always tried to bring music to the wider Jewish community. In 1999 she was appointed Musical Director of the mixed voice Zemel Choir, the only woman to have held the post.

For a three year research project entitled 'Reflections, Jewish Musical Journeys' Vivienne was awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund grant. This project collects Passover melodies and songs from around the UK, tracing the journeys and stories that accompany them.

Vivienne's contribution to the musical life of British Jewry is inestimable, enriching the lives of so many with her drive and enthusiasm for music both liturgical and secular.
