Write us a Birthday Song!

75th Birthday Song Competition

Content last updated:
We are inviting applications to our 75th Birthday Song Competition. We would like you to write us a song for unaccompanied voices, lasting 5-10 minutes, in celebration of singing and the joy and wellbeing that people experience through singing and music making.

There are three categories:
1) A four-part song for adult mixed voices (soprano/alto/tenor/bass)
2) A two-part song for children to sing
3) A song written by a young person (under 18) for any combination or number of voices

The composers of the winning entries in each category will receive a trophy, and in addition the winning four-part song will be workshopped by a vocal leader at our conference in Bristol on 11 September 2010. The selected song in each category will be shared with all of our 2,850 member organisations (copyright remaining with the composer) for further performances and their composers profiled on our website and in our magazine Highnotes.

Here’s what we are looking for:
- An original unaccompanied song according to one of the categories outlined above, of no more than ten minutes’ duration
- An original text, or an existing text for which you have appropriate permission to set, which celebrates singing and expresses the pleasure and wellbeing that people experience when singing
- A technical level appropriate for easy learning: in the case of category 1) above, the winning song will form the basis of a singing workshop during our conference, and will be learned within a short space of time
- An appealing setting which will be fun and enjoyable to sing, and accessible by a large range of singers and choirs
