Making Music, BBC Radio 3 and the Association of British Orchestras present the Listen Up! Festival of Orchestras |

This festival aims to reflect the strength, diversity and commitment of the whole UK orchestral community, amateur and professional alike.
The vitality of amateur and professional orchestras in Britain was left in no doubt, as we celebrated the second national Listen Up! festival in October 2006. All over the country, orchestras organised special concerts and events, which BBC Radio 3 listeners were encouraged to attend both on air and online. These events ranged from Brahms' 2nd piano concerto in Edinburgh, to an orchestral "Play Day" in Penzance; and from "Peter and the Wolf" in Cardiff, to a steel-pan workshop on the Isle of Wight. The Epsom Symphony Orchestra won particular praise for its extraordinary concert, tying in with the Espom Derby.
As well as these events, we asked all member orchestras to provide us with any recordings they would like broadcast on BBC Radio 3. We had a huge and immediate response, and it was terrifically exciting to hear these recordings played at prime time on national radio - almost every day of the festival. We are working to ensure that the tremendously positive response to this initiative will serve as inspiration for more amateur music to be broadcast in the future.
We are now planning the next Listen Up! for 2008, and would be interested to hear your thoughts on how it could be developed.
