Making Music Membership Survey 2005: Summary  
The following statistics are quoted for 2005 data unless specified otherwise. Please note that these figures have not been adjusted to account for increases in membership, so some statistics may be slightly distorted as a result.

Membership

- At the end of 2005 we had 2,331 members of which 1,948 were performing groups and 383 promoting groups.

- Making Music member groups contain over 181,242 people

- 27% of Making Music performing groups have an average age of under 45 years. The average age of individuals in membership is 50.

- 41% of member groups have been in existence for ten years or more (compared with 39% in 2003).

- 94% of Making Music groups lose fewer than 15 members a year and most of them fewer than 6 members.

Concerts and other events

- The average number of concerts organised by our members per year is 9,148. In 2003 this figure was 9,347.

- The average number of concerts organised by our performing members per year is 6,334. In 2003 this figure was 6,216.

- The average number of concerts organised by our promoting members per year is 2,814. In 2003 this figure was 3,131.

- The most popular evening for concert performances remains Saturday, with 68% of concerts taking place on this day for performing members.

Audiences

- The average audience size for a performing group concert in 2005 was 188, compared with 205 in 2003.

- The average audience size for a promoting group concert in 2005 was 125, compared with 137 in 2003.

Finances

- Overall our members spent £13.5 million on professional artists, compared with £9.2 million in 2003. This represents just over 37,000 individual artists.

- Our members raise over £1 million per year for charity.

- Our members spend £1.3 million per year with music publishers, compared with £1.1 million in 2003 (an increase of 18%).

- The average ticket price charged by our members for their events is £8.

- The average yearly subscription to one of our performing member groups is £56, an increase of 14% on 2003.

Artistic issues

- 65% of promoters plan their concert season at least 12 to 18 months ahead, compared with 50% in 2003.

Contemporary Music

- In 2005, 6,540 groups participated in concerts containing 20C music. This compares with 5,871 in 2003, an increase of 11%.

- Overall our members commission on average 237 new works per year.

- Promoting groups commission on average 25 new works per year. This is a reduction of 51% on figures from 2003.

- Performing groups commission on average 212 new works per year. This is an increase of 5% on figures from 2003.

Touring

- 28% of performing members (548 groups) conduct an overseas tour at least once every five years, compared with 25% in 2003.

Who's carrying out this work?   Our history
Making Music employs full-time staff at the London Office and part-time staff around the country.   Sir George Dyson was Making Music's first president when we were established back in 1935. Since then, we have had eleven presidents.
