Heather has worked part-time for Making Music since 2003.
Having followed her studies at Birmingham University with a Master's degree from the Royal Academy of Music, she leads a double career as a professional recorder and keyboard player.

The founder and artistic director of period instrument Baroque ensemble Musica Viva, Heather performs as recorder soloist both with them and with orchestras in London and the South-East, as well as giving recitals all over the UK.

As a piano/keyboard accompanist, musical theatre is Heather's specialism and she deputises in the West End pit bands as well as giving vocal coaching and assisting with auditions. Having first served as Musical Director for a South London Theatre production in 2003, she has continued to do so with both voluntary and professional theatre companies, including leading the premieres of two American shows at Croydon's Warehouse Theatre in 2006. Her work encompasses jazz and big band, early music, opera, folk and contemporary, and also playing for voluntary choirs in London and Surrey.

From time to time Heather combines work and holiday by performing on board cruise ships, and in 2007 will be travelling again: taking Musica Viva to perform at Pashley Manor Gardens in Sussex, and alone to Australia for concerts as recorder soloist with a modern string quartet, and a trio with cello and organ.

As London's Regional Development Officer

Take advantage of dedicated advice from two practising professional musicians.

Heather Tomala and Tom Hammond are available to advise members on all aspects of music-making and running a music group in London, as well as on how to help ensure your group evolves and lasts into the future. As well as the more common themes of marketing, recruitment and funding, they can help with artistic and programming issues and the specific needs of your group.

Maintaining links with Arts Development Officers and other arts and music organisations, Heather and Tom regularly attend and speak at external events with a view to benefiting and increasing opportunities for Making Music members. They can also help member groups put together funding applications and project proposals.

More recently, their work has taken the direction of community-focused projects. Following their hugely successful pilot Music & Health project in partnership with Notting Hill Housing earlier this year, it is anticipated there will be many more such ways of involving London member groups musically with their local communities.

They also work closely with the voluntary London Committee to increase contact with the Making Music membership. In short, they act as a first contact point in London.
