Linda Young was born in Glasgow in 1950 and now lives Clydebank. She graduated MA (Hons) in Classics from Glasgow University and is a qualified secondary school teacher. For as long as she can remember music has played a large part in her life. She has sung in choirs since her schooldays and is an erstwhile cellist. She has also taken to the stage, playing principal roles with a Gilbert and Sullivan Society. Currently she sings with Strathaven Choral Society and The Strathaven Singers and assists with the choral society's junior section.
She has been involved with Making Music since 1991 when she became simultaneously her society's NFMS Society Contact (as it was then) and a member of the Scottish Committee. She was Scottish Secretary from 1994-2003 and has just become Chair of Making Music Scotland. She has served on the Making Music Board since 1996, including six years as Vice Chairman from 1999-2005. In her current role as Internal Director her main focus is to foster a good working relationship with the 13 Making Music Committees around the UK, and she especially enjoys the opportunity this affords to visit different parts of the country and meet so many interesting people who are dedicated to the support of live music.
In the spare time which Making Music and choirs allow, Linda is employed by Strathaven Academy as Chief Invigilator (overseer of internal and external examinations). She also volunteers as a librarian in her local Primary School and is a Board member and the magazine editor in her church. She has a daughter who has just rediscovered the advantages of living at home, and a son who lives in London; both played instruments at school but now never have enough time! |
