NEWS FOR CHARITIES
  The Charities Act 2006
The Charities Act 2006 was passed in November 2006 and introduces a few changes to the governance of charitable organisations. The main features which may affect members of Making Music include:

- The income threshold for charitable registration with the Charity Commission increases from £1,000 to £5,000

- The Charities Act 2006 introduces a new type of governance structure for charities, the Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). This will enable liability for the members of a charity to be limited in a similar way to a charitable company, but without the considerable bureaucratic burden that operating as a company entails. Although this does not come into effect until 2008, it is Making Music's belief that many of our members will benefit from becoming a CIO, or setting up as one.

See our Information Sheet no.12, 'Setting up a Society and Model Constitution' for more information. This can be found in the members area.
