Sprotbrough Music Society |

Sprotbrough Music Society is one of only two Concert Promoting societies amongst Making Music members to have been awarded the Positive About Equal Opportunities Award. |
|
 |
 |
Why did you decide to approach the issue of equal opportunities with your choir?
Ernest Beckwith attended a Making Music Equal Opportunities Event in 2001 and was very impressed by it. He could see a time arising whereby funding would rely on having this or a similar award and decided to encourage the Sprotbrough Music Society to apply for it.
How do you think it benefits your choir?
The Sprotbrough Music Society believes in keeping ahead of movements, and this was a way to ensure we were up to date in the area of Equal Opportunities. We were also lucky in that we have had heavy building works and therefore have new toilets and ramps with disabled access.
How did you find the application process?
Convincing the group to apply was extremely difficult due to amount of paperwork; no-one really wanted to wade through 12 pages. However we did decide to apply and were successful.
Does having the logo have an impact on your choir's administrative activities?
It hasn't made a difference in funding applications yet, but we can see that the time when it is compulsory to have such an award is coming closer. We are a promoting group so we don't audition, and we are open to anyone who wants to be in office. Despite this, we find it almost impossible to include/encourage people from different social groups to join our group.
Is there anything in particular you would say to a group to encourage them to apply for the award?
It WILL be very important in getting funding in the future, so it is worth sorting out now.

The process of getting the award helped LMO develop a new procedure for finding and auditioning new members. |

The choir is considering Equal Opportunity aspects, such as access and location, as they search for a new rehearsal venue. |
