Bishopwearmouth Choral Society |
Bishopwearmouth Choral Society is a mixed voice choir with approximately 85 members who perform in and around Sunderland. They perform sacred and secular works three times a year in Sunderland Minster with invited professional soloists and orchestras. New members are always welcome, tenors in particular, at any rehearsal. The group holds a number of social and fund-raising events each year, in which they invite supporters and prospective members to attend.
Mrs Eileen Watson spoke to us about the Making Music Positive About Equal Opportunities Award:

Why did you decide to apply for the Positive About Equal Opportunities Award?
The choir applied after they received information about the award from Making Music.
Was it difficult to apply for the award?
Our business manager is very involved in the Church where we perform (Minster in Sunderland) and the venue is also part of the council. Therefore it is an accessible venue, which helped the choir qualify for the award.
How do you use the Positive About Equal Opportunities Logo?
The symbol is used in programmes and in funding applications, but there is no evidence that it has an effect on such applications.
How did your group benefit from applying for the Positive About Equal Opportunities Award?
We replaced the staging because it was necessary for our older members who perform with the society. We have a large number of mature patrons so there is a designated door apart from the main entrance for their venue access.

This group is one of only two Promoting members among Making Music to receive the Positive About Equal Opportunities Award. |

This choir considers equal opportunities to help them maintain a balance between achieving a high standard of performance and making music accessible. |

Choir member Mr Hywel Davies wrote the Society's Equal Opportunities Policy, which is used by Making Music as an example for other choirs. |
The choir is considering Equal Opportunity aspects, such as access and location, as they search for a new rehearsal venue. |
