Based in the Brighton area, Kate is a recent addition to the national RDO team, joining Making Music at the beginning of 2008.
Originally trained as a violinist, Kate has been studying traditional music in Tanzania, East Africa since 1999 using traditional songs and "ilimba" (a complex thumbharp instrument) as the basis for performances and workshops across the UK.
Following postgraduate training at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Kate specialises in participatory music for children and adults with a particular emphasis on relaxation and well-being. Recent projects include creating a CD with day patients at the Martlet's Hospice in Hove as part of the 2007 Brighton Festival, a project at the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital in Brighton, and world music workshops for schools in the Sussex area. Kate released her first solo CD "Under Redwood" in 2006 (the "ilimba" sound world can be explored at www.katemaembe.com!).
From 1995 - 1998 Kate worked as Education Manager for the City of London Sinfonia, devising and delivering a wide range of community projects. She then joined Sound Sense (the UK Development Agency for Community Music) as Projects Officer, where she helped to develop regional networks and events. Kate is currently setting up a new Sussex-based organisation, Kutulia Music, which promotes the use of music in healthcare settings and education as a tool for well-being.
Kate is on hand to provide support and advice to members about funding, opportunities for collaboration, community development projects and general information about the wealth of resources which Making Music can offer to local groups. She is also currently working with the South East Committee to improve communications and promote networking between music groups throughout the region.
