Mathieu van Bellen (Hulst, Netherlands) began his violin studies at the age of four. During the first year he was taught by Mrs. Schepman. He continued with Mr. Nico Baltussen in Sint-Niklaas (Belgium) at the Academy of Music-Word -and- Dance. In February 2000 he was invited to study at the Conservatory in Amsterdam. From September 2002 he studied at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester (UK) with Professor Jan Repko where he was given a scholarship by the VandenEnde Foundation. During his years at Chetham's, Mathieu took part in many prestigious chamber music events and won the school's concerto competition, and twice the Dewhurst Torevell Award for Chamber Music. In 2006 Mathieu won a scholarship for the Royal College of Music in London to study with Professor Itzhak Rashkovsky, where he is now enrolled and has already been chosen to lead several of the RCM ensembles.

As String Player of the Year 2008 at the Royal College of Music, he has participated in several competitions including Jong Tenuto, Prinses Christina Competition (1st prize, and several other prizes), The Iordens Viooldagen, Davina van Wely concours, The Wieniawski Competition, Young musician of the Year Holland, Yehudi Menuhin Competition, and Oskar Back National Violin Competition of Holland. Mathieu is also a recipient of an MBF (Musician's Benevolent Fund), RPS Emily Anderson Prize 2008, and a Philharmonia Orchestra/Martin Musical Scholarship Fund 2008 Awards, amongst others. He has given concerts in The Netherlands, Belgium, United Kingdom, Poland, USA, Denmark, Japan, Greece, Israel and in Belarus, playing in many major Music Festivals like the Haagse 3 Daagse (The Hague Holland, 2008) and the Shostakovich and Brahms/Schumann Festivals in Manchester.

In May 2007 he made his debut in the Concertgebouw in both the Main Auditorium (Grote Zaal) and Recital Auditorium (Kleine Zaal). Future engagements include a concerto with the Southbank Sinfonia, and a recital in the Royal Festival Hall, London.

Mathieu has often played for television and radio programmes in Holland and in Belgium he has played several times as a soloist with orchestra, including the Brabants Orchestra, the Zeeuws Orchestra, Orchestra of Belarus, the Gelders Orchestra, TY Chamber Orchestra, National Orchestra of Belgium, and Camerata Athena in Athens. As a graduate of the Keshet Eilon Violin Mastercourse 2008, where he studied with Schlomo Mintz, Mathieu also had masterclasses with distinguished artists such as Nikolaj Znaider, Maxim Vengerov, David Finckel, Herman Krebbers, Simon Fontanelli, Gordon Back, Ani Schnarch, Rudolf Koelman, Bruno Schrecker, and Yair Kless. As a member of the Wu Quartet and the Goethe Piano Trio, he has also performed in chamber music concerts with Schlomo Mintz, Evgenia Maria Popova, Mark Padmore, Roger Vignoles, Matthew Trusler, Graham Oppenheimer and Craig Ogdon, among others.

Mathieu plays on a beautiful violin made by Allesandro Gagliano, which was bought for him by Delta N.V.
