The first course of the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq kicks off in just a few days' time with an intensive two week course of orchestral playing and masterclasses, conducting and chamber music tuition. It will culminate in a gala concert on 16 August at the Opera House in the northern Kurdish city of Suleimaniya.
After many months of planning by the artistic team - Zuhal Sultan (who has just turned eighteen), Paul MacAlindin and Allegra Klein - it's incredibly exciting to know that this wonderful project will now go ahead and bring together 33 young Iraqi musicians to play together and receive coaching from a team of professional tutors.
The inaugural course is now a reality thanks in large part to funds and support provided by the British Council, UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office, Iraqi government and many individual donations. The orchestra is still some way short of its target of £120,000 which will ensure it has sufficient basis to continue beyond these two weeks, and you are warmly invited to make a donation to help with this appeal by clicking the link below.
