Sheffield supports singers from Cuba
The Sheffield based Voces de Cuba project is bringing Camerata de Música Áurea, a choir from Santiago de Cuba, to perform in venues in Yorkshire and the UK
Published on: 10/02/2012
Camerata de Música Áurea sing classical pieces, from Monteverdi to Flight of the Bumblebee, in multi-part harmony. They also perform more traditional Cuban music, from the typically amorous boleros to modern folk songs with vibrant Cuban rhythms. Members of Sheffield Socialist Choir first met up with Música Áurea at the biennial choral festival in Santiago in 2003, and started the 'Voces de Cuba' project with the sole purpose of bringing Música Áurea to the UK in the summer of 2012.
During June and July 2012, Música Áurea will be leading workshops and connecting with schools and community choirs all over Yorkshire, and performing in a wide range of settings, from formal concerts of baroque music to community festivals. They will also be visiting partner choirs in Edinburgh, Leeds and Bradford, York and Nottingham. The supporting project, Voces de Cuba, is currently busy on the huge task of raising funds for the journey.
