For the next two years Making Music will be supporting CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity, by helping them to raise £50,000.
Every day 10 families are told their child has cancer. CLIC Sargent is the only organisation to offer them all round care and support. The charity was formed in 2005 after a successful merger between CLIC and Sargent Cancer Care for Children.
- Sargent Cancer Care for Children - founded in 1968 by Sylvia Darley OBE as a lasting memory to the late Sir Malcolm Sargent
- CLIC - Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood - founded in 1976 in the South West by Bob Woodward following the death of his young son to cancer
About CLIC Sargent
The charity is there from the point of diagnosis with clinical, practical and emotional support, helping the whole family cope with the impact of cancer and its treatment, life after treatment and, in some cases, bereavement.
CLIC Sargent has specialist care teams including nurses, social workers, youth workers and play specialists, based at the regional children’s and young people’s cancer centres across the UK to help support families - while they’re on the ward and when they go home.
The charity also provides financial help to meet extra costs, free accommodation close to specialist cancer centres and holidays in the UK.
Lack of funds means that CLIC Sargent can only help two out of three children and young people with cancer – that’s why your support is so important.
How can I get involved?
Practice-a-thon is a national fundraising event for singers, dancers and musicians, where they can practice and perform, to raise money for children with cancer. We are teaming up with CLIC Sargent to invite Making Music member groups to get involved. Any members that take part in Practice-a-thon will be able to claim back 10% of the money they raise.
Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Why not make your next planned concert a fundraiser for CLIC Sargent? You could even sell refreshments at the interval to raise extra funds or donate 10% of box office sales
- Invite other music groups, youth groups or local schools to join you in a sponsored Practice-a-thon marathon
- Organise sponsored practice sessions in preparation for your next performance
We will provide fundraising materials and promotional posters to help promote your event.
How your performance will help:
£20 could pay for a CLIC Sargent Play Specialist to help a child prepare for and cope with treatment, by using models, toys and photos to explain what will happen.
£780 could pay for a CLIC Sargent Youth Development Worker for a week, who help young people maintain a sense of normality, planning activities to build confidence and help them live life to the full.
£950 could pay for a specialist break for a bereaved family, allowing them to spend time together and with other families. Talking to people who understand, in a sensitive, supportive environment, can provide real comfort.
£2500 could pay for a discussion day for 20 children and young people with cancer.
