In preparation for the large-scale community opera The Opera of the Chester Giants in June 2012, there was a performance of the main anthem from the Opera ‘Across The World’ at Chester’s Roman Amphitheatre on Saturday 3 March 3 2012. The story is based on a female giant (the bride) from Chester travelling the world to seek a groom. Chester is the international city of giants.
A mass choir, in various sections, performed the anthem. The 400+ strong participants were made up of choirs and school children drawn from across Cheshire. Chester’s most well known choir, A Handbag of Harmonies, led the anthem. This was the first time A Handbag of Harmonies led such a project, incorporating school choirs and other community choirs. Many of the giants from Chester’s community of Giants provided an added visual spectacle to the event, as well as offering a foretaste for the Opera in June.
The different choirs performed the various sections of the anthem, and simple but effective choreography added to the epic feel of the event.
