Love Music

Love Music is a music inclusion and education charity which creates participatory projects through which communities can come together with musicians in a professional setting and participate in inspirational music making. Our core ethos is equality of access and our projects are designed for people of all abilities and levels of musical experience.

Our largest longstanding project is Love Music Community Choir which usually meets in Edinburgh's iconic Usher Hall for 3 terms of 9 weeks each year. We sing a hugely diverse range of music from across the world and work and perform with inspiring guest artists. Since lockdown we have moved online and have enjoyed welcoming new members of all ages from across the UK to sing with us in 5-week terms - we currently have over 250 members. Online music-making is different than in person, but we have received incredible feedback from our choir members that the online sessions are a lot of fun and have been keeping them singing, happier and feeling less isolated, and keeping us all connected as a community. We provide video and audio learning resources to help with learning in between sessions, and our rehearsals are led by our director Stephen Deazley and supported by the Love Music team. We provide Zoom training for anyone who is unsure about using it, along with practise sessions to try it out in a safe and supported space. All our sessions are live-streamed to YouTube for those who prefer to watch or catch up at other times. We operate on a pay what you can afford basis, with a suggested amount per term and a free place if you can't afford to pay.

Love Music Junior Choir is for up to 200 8-12 year olds and is based at Edinburgh's Usher Hall. We've not been able to run sessions during the pandemic, but are working on plans to start up again as soon as it is safe to do so. In the meantime, we've been adapting our plans to work with young people in schools, both virtually and in person, and to deepen our impact in areas of greater need. Our latest singing project is Love Singing, which is connecting together 5 Scottish-based songwriters and community choirs to create 5 new songs which will be accessible and available for all community choirs to sing. We'll develop learning and teaching resources for each song, and will document the project's progress, with the aim of providing learning points and useful information to support the community choir sector and help it thrive while we can't sing in person. Sign up to receive updates and to be informed of when the songs are ready for your own choirs to sing: https://www.sing.lovemusic.org.uk
