A Hymn to St Cecilia

Cappella Novocastriensis returns to the glorious acoustic of St Ann’s Church on the feast day of the patron saint of music, Saint Cecilia, with an exciting programme of contemporary choral music. We will be joined by cellist Deborah Thorne and two percussionists to perform Gabriel Jackson’s To the Field of Stars. Inspired by the Camino de Santiago, this piece tells the legend of the Camino, its history and even depicts the compostella, or field of stars. At its climax, Jackson reworks Tomás Luis de Victoria’s O Quam Gloriosum into eight parts, adding embellishments and descants. Alongside this very exciting and rarely heard composition, we will perform Benjamin Britten’s Hymn to Saint Cecilia, on what would have been the composer’s 106th birthday. The programme is completed with solos selected from Bach’s cello suites.
