Fretwork, viol ensemble

'In Nomine'

This fascinating programme by Fretwork, “the finest viol consort on the planet” (London Evening Standard), demonstrates the treasure trove of “In Nomine” settings. These stem from John Taverner’s 16th-century setting of the Benedictus (which includes the phrase in nomine Domini (in the name of the Lord)) from a Mass built on the plainchant “Gloria tibi Trinitas”. Over the last 150 years English composers were inspired to compose variants in their own style, including two by living composers, Nico Muhly and Gavin Bryars.

John Taverner; Christopher Tye; Robert Parsons; William Byrd; Picforth; Orlando Gibbons; Nico Muhly; William Lawes; Gavin Bryars; Henry Purcell
