Robert Schumann: Manfred Overture, Op. 115
‘…grief should be the instructor of the wise; Sorrow is knowledge…’ Schumann’s Manfred Overture, regarded by many as one of his best orchestral compositions, introduces us to Lord Byron’s anti- hero, tormented by the knowledge that his actions led to the death of his beloved. The overture is marked to be played with passion as Manfred confronts his guilt and grief, growing quieter at the end, as he finds release in death.
