Robert Schumann: Manfred Overture, Op. 115
‘…grief should be the instructor of the wise; Sorrow is knowledge…’ Schumann’s Manfred Overture, regarded by many as one of his best orchestral compositions, introduces us to Lord Byron’s anti- hero, tormented by the knowledge that his actions led to the death of his beloved. The overture is marked to be played with passion as Manfred confronts his guilt and grief, growing quieter at the end, as he finds release in death.

Camille Saint-Saens: Piano Concerto No. 5 in F Major, Op. 103
Do you need a break from this long English winter? Then let Saint-Saens’ ‘Egyptian’ Piano Concerto take you over the rippling waters to sun-drenched North Africa. You will travel down the Nile, accompanied by hints of a Nubian love song, before sailing back to the glitter of Paris.

Sergei Rachmaninov: Symphony No. 2 in E Minor, Op. 27
Rachmaninov said he composed to give expression to his feelings. His Symphony No. 2 is steeped in passion, longing, melancholy and jubilation. The melody in the Adagio movement is one of the most beautiful he ever wrote. In his ability to touch the longing we all can feel, to console, to take us over in many ways, Rachmaninov’s music is unforgettable.
