Chester Philharmonic at Chester Cathedral

World Famous Cellist

Sheku Kanneh-Mason to perform with

Chester Philharmonic Orchestra

at Chester Cathedral

Chester Philharmonic Orchestra is thrilled to have World Famous Cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason to join us for our final concert of the season in Chester Cathedral to play Haydn’s Cello Concerto No 2. He will be towards the end of his US and European tour taking in Carnegie Hall, New York, and the Philharmonie, Berlin, along with major other venues across the US and Europe.

Sheku became a household name from his performance at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall at Windsor Castle watched by 2 billion people globally. This was after winning the prestigious BBC Young Musician competition in 2016.

This year is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Vaughan Williams. He was deeply interested in Folk music and travelled the country notating folk songs and carols for future generations. We open the concert with his English Folk Song Suite which brings to life some of this music.

The concert concludes with Brahms’s magisterial 4th Symphony which has been classed as “one of the greatest orchestral works since Beethoven” by the musicologist Donald Francis Tovey.

The orchestra is delighted to welcome back Stephen Threlfall to direct the performance. Stephen’s experience first as a cellist with the BBC Philharmonic and latterly as retired Music Director at Chetham’s Music School brings out the depth of detail in the music.

The Chester Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the North West’s premier non-professional orchestras. Further details of upcoming concerts, can be found on the Orchestra’s web site:
