Richard Blackford is one of the UK's pre-eminent concert and media composers. Mirror of Perfection was composed in the 1990s, and sets the delightful poetry of St Francis of Assisi in a powerful cantata of great lyrical beauty.
Maurice Duruflé composed his longest and most substantial work, Requiem, at the end of World War II and, perhaps not surprisingly, he focusses his settings on rest and peace.
These 20th century pieces are balanced by Edward Elgar’s Serenade for Strings, written and first performed at the end of the 19th century, and still among the most frequently performed of all his music.
