Brahms requiem

Monmouth Choral Society will perform one of the gems of the choral repertoire, the Brahms German Requiem, at the Blake Theatre, Monmouth at 7.30 pm on Saturday March 23. The concert will be conducted by the choir's musical director, Steven Kings, with the Bristol Ensemble and soloists Rosanna Harris, soprano, and James Geidt, baritone. The evening will also include songs and orchestral works by Mendelssohn.

Steven Kings says: “Brahms the humanist, not a believer in any obvious sense, made his own very personal selection of Biblical texts for his German Requiem, reflecting above all the comfort that can be offered to the bereaved amidst the uncertainties and transience of human life. His music is by turns mysterious, terrifying, consoling and triumphant, but always beautifully composed and richly Romantic in tone.”

Tickets for the concert are £19, or £5 for under-18s, and are available from the Blake Theatre Box Office, telephone 01600 719401, www.theblaketheatre.org
