Morpeth Music Society concert: Peter Donohoe, piano

Programme (on occasion, the artist may make minor changes to the published programme)

Haydn Sonata in C major Hob. 48
Beethoven  Sonata in A major Op. 101
Schumann Toccata Op. 7
Schumann Arabesque Op.18
Tchaikovsky Sonata in C sharp minor No 2 Op. 80

The society is delighted to welcome pianist Peter Donohoe to open our 75th season.  Peter established himself as an international name when he won the silver medal at the 1982 Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow.  His most recent triumph in the North East was in 2016 when he stepped in, on the same day, to substitute for an unwell Lars Vogt to play a magnificent performance of Beethoven's Emperor concerto (without rehearsal!) at the Sage Gateshead.

Peter has chosen a firmly classical programme for us featuring Schumann's Toccata Op. 7 which the composer claimed to be the 'hardest piece ever written' at the time of completion followed by the calmer Arabesque.  The highlight of the programme is likely to be Tchaikovsky's imposing second piano sonata, published after the composer's death.

‘with flying hands, and turning on a sixpence between jewelled delicacy and swashbuckling swagger, he carried the performance with benign authority.' Independent
