Phoenix Choir of Crawley concert - Durufle 'Requiem'

The main item in our Spring concert is Maurice Duruflé’s ‘Requiem’ – this wonderful, luminous work, first published in 1947, is a powerful and moving setting of the Roman Catholic Mass for the Dead. Using themes from Gregorian chant, Duruflé created a hauntingly beautiful mass full of grace and open-hearted sincerity, which has become one of the most popular twentieth century choral works. Also included will be ‘Five Mystical Songs’ by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Spirituals from ‘A Child of Our Time’ by Michael Tippett.
Phoenix Choir of Crawley will be conducted by their Music Director, Samuel Hayes, and accompanied on the organ by Alex Hiam, with Una Birtchnell
providing the cello obligato in the Requiem. Soloists will be soprano Natalie Montakhab, mezzo-soprano Jennifer Westwood, and baritone James Cleverton.
St Wilfrid’s School Hall is a modern, comfortable and accessible venue with all the facilities under the same roof.
Refreshments will be available during the interval. There is plenty of parking right outside the hall, and Metrobus numbers 1 and 23 stop nearby.
