Songfest – Music by Johannes Brahms; Edward Elgar; Richard Strauss
Somerset Chamber Choir
Richard Laing – Conductor
Anita D’Attellis – Piano
Karen Wise – Mezzo-Soprano
The end of the 19th century saw the finest flowering of the Romantic spirit in Art. Musicians and poets alike were inspired by the visible landscape of Europe and the inner landscape of the soul, creating some of the most gorgeous choral music in the entire repertoire.
Somerset Chamber Choir is pleased to be presenting a selection of works by Brahms, Strauss and Elgar, spanning just 27 years in the composition, but covering a wealth of human experience. Poetry by Alfred Tennyson, lice Elgar, Joseph von Eichendorff, Friedrich Rückert and others is set to music expressing love and loss, sorrow and ecstasy, by three of the greatest Romantic composers, each of whom is also represented by sublime songs for mezzo-soprano and piano. Featuring several rarely-performed gems alongside some well-loved classics, this will be an uplifting and inspiring concert.
