Music for Passiontide

To mark the season of Lent, we present a selection of music composed for Passiontide, from late Renaissance masterpieces to works by renowned contemporary composers. The centrepiece of the concert is Stainer’s Crucifixion – a work last performed by St George’s Singers 60 years ago in 1957. Enormously popular in its day, but infrequently performed nowadays, the Crucifixion is a fine example of mid-Victorian church music, written as a more approachable alternative to Bach’s Passions. The programme also includes music by Gibbons, Gjeilo, Lotti, Purcell, Tomkins and Vittoria.
