SSO brings Music from the Movies to All Saints Church Carshalton

7.30pm on 29th June something  a little different is happening, something a bit special…for the first time ever Sutton Symphony Orchestra will be performing a programme literally full of film music. All Saints Church Carshalton will resonate to the sounds of wizards, aliens, dinosaurs and more.

No programme of film music would be complete without paying homage to the man who’s won 24 Grammy awards, 7 BAFTA’s, 5 Academy Awards and 4 Golden Globes over a career of 60+ years and we’ll pay our respects to John Williams by playing:
    •    Jurassic Park
    •    Schindler’s List
    •    E.T.
    •    Empire Strikes Back
    •    Harry Potter

We’ll also throw in a James Bond suite (Monty Norman) for good measure and some Pirates of the Caribbean (Klaus Badelt).

Many classical pieces have been used to good effect in movies. For us, Tchaikovsky’s 1812 overture and the adagietto from Mahler’s 5th symphony fall into this category. The 1812 has been used in countless films and TV dramas for obvious reasons –bells,  cannon and mortar effects – what’s not to like? The Mahler most famously featured in a cholera-ridden and atmospheric Death in Venice. Conversely Walton composed a film score The First of the Few in 1942 and then reused bits to form his ever-popular Spitfire Prelude and Fugue. Chocks away chaps.

Do join us for Music at the Movies – bring tissues for ET, earplugs for the 1812 and light sabres if the force is strong with you. Tickets on the door or from wegottickets - under 18s go free! Refreshments at the interval, shaken not stirred.
