BORODIN In the Steppes of Central Asia
SHOSTAKOVICH Cello Concerto No. 1
DVOŘÁK Symphony No. 6
Alexander Walker – conductor
Julian Metzger – cello

Trinity Orchestra is thrilled to welcome guest conductor Alexander Walker, a charismatic musician who is a great champion of Russian music.
Appropriately, the programme contains two great works by Russian composers. In The Steppes of Central Asia is one of Borodin‘s most popular works, painting an atmospheric picture of the approach and disappearance of a camel train in empty desert wastes.
Shostakovich‘s Cello Concerto No. 1 was completed in 1959 and is generally regarded as the most popular cello concerto of the twentieth century. It will be performed in this concert by Julian Metzger, a cellist who is enjoying an illustrious career and who has been highly praised for his technically and musically exciting performances.
The final work in this programme will be Symphony No. 6 in D Major by Antonin Dvořák, one of the most pleasing symphonies of its time. What Robert Simpson wrote of the early symphonies of Carl Nielsen – that they “express a growing, deepening sense of the sheer joy of being alive” – might surely be said of this radiant work as well.
