CHERUBINI Médeé Overture
DVOŘÁK Violin Concerto
BRAHMS Serenade No. 1

John Andrews – conductor
Fenella Humphreys – violin

For our first concert of the new year, Music Director John Andrews returns to the conductor’s podium for the little-known but charming Overture Médée by Cherubini, a score which Brahms considered to be “the highest peak of dramatic music”.
The centrepiece will be a performance of Dvořák’s much-loved Violin Concerto, starring the highly acclaimed violinist Fenella Humphreys as soloist, who has been described as “a wonder” and praised for playing with “golden precision and effortless virtuosity”. Dvořák wrote his tuneful, dancing Violin Concerto in 1879 for the great Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim.
Rounding off the programme will be a performance of the delightful Serenade No. 1 by Johannes Brahms, which pays homage to the great tradition of Mozart.
