Sweet Thames Run Softly

Wooburn Singers have an eclectic mix for their Festival concert this year.  They are joining forces with players from The Chiltern Camerata, plus harpist Tamara Young.  The beautiful church of All Saints, beside the river at Marlow, is the perfect setting for Sir George Dyson’s cantata, Sweet Thames Run Softly, with baritone soloist Ashley Riches.  Then follows the first performance of a short piece by Neil Brand: Say not the Struggle nought Availeth. Neil is an acclaimed composer of film scores for silent movies (https://www.neilbrand.com ).  The concert concludes with Maurice Durufle’s beautiful Requiem, in which the composer skilfully intertwines Gregorian chant melodies of the burial Mass with his own sensuous harmonies. Duruflé explains: “It reflects, in the unchanging form of Christian prayer, the anguish of man faced with the mystery of his final end.”
