Director of Music - London Saxophone Choir

Application deadline:
Sunday, 11 February 2018
Description of vacancy:

We are now seeking a new Director of Music, to take over from our current Director of Music in May 2018.

Role description

The Director of Music is responsible for repertoire selection and planning, preparing for and conducting rehearsals, formal concerts and informal performances.

One of our key strengths is our inclusivity, which allows musicians of different levels of experience/training to play together.  This in part is due to our flexible instrumentation, whereby most of our own repertoire includes parts which can be played by different saxophones (e.g. the same part is written for alto and tenor) and some players play multiple instruments. The relatively few published sax ensemble pieces usually have fixed instrumentation, which is less suitable for our ensemble.

Accordingly, a core responsibility of the Director of Music is the willingness and ability to curate our existing repertoire, as well as gradually extending it through writing or commissioning new scores.

The successful candidate will satisfy the following essential criteria:

  • Experience of conducting an ensemble

  • Leadership experience

  • Friendly, approachable and enthusiastic

  • Well organised

  • Willingness to curate our existing repertoire

  • Willingness and ability to increase our repertoire by writing and/or commissioning new scores

  • Commitment to attend all rehearsals and performances

  • Willingness to compère performances

Experience of playing the saxophone preferred

£60 per rehearsal / performance
