Choral society accompanist/ Assistant Music Director.

Portsmouth Choral Union is one of the leading amateur choirs in the South of England, and are seeking to appoint an accompanist for September 2024 due to a career move  by our present accompanist. 

We number between 100-115 auditioned singers and perform four concerts per year plus a Come and Sing event and an occasional Workshop day. We sing a wide range of repertoire from large classic pieces to more contemporary works. Our dynamic conductor David Gostick is a champion of unusual and little known works, and also has a wide experience in opera and church music.

1 Accompanying weekly rehearsals, providing supportive playing to help singers in musical preparation.

2 Taking sectional and full rehearsals as required.

3 When needed and depending on the post- holders skills, accompanying concerts on piano/ organ/ continuo instruments, either solo or as part of an orchestra. 
Supporting the conductor in musical planning and preparation. 
 

Essential : the person will have:

A high level of keyboard skills, with the ability to render orchestral accompaniments sensitively and to score read accurately. 
Experience of choral accompaniment, and choral conducting. 
An understanding of the needs of amateur singers and experience of working with a conductor. 
 

Desirable: 

Proficiency as an organist and continuo player.  Vocal proficiency.
