Join us for our first ever conducting workshop with Martyn Brabbins, Music Director of English National Opera!

This evening workshop will help musical directors to further develop their ensemble leadership skills and conducting techniques. Under Martyn’s guidance, five conductors will rehearse a leisure-time orchestra for 30 minutes each and receive on-the-spot feedback. Benefit first hand from Martyn’s experience and expertise, either as an observer or from the podium as one of the five participating conductors. 

During the workshop participants and observers will:

  • Gain insight into the music being rehearsed
  • Pick up tips on conducting and rehearsal technique
  • Find out how to inspiare and influence an ensemble
  • Learn how to get an ensemble to follow their lead
  • Develop confidence as a conductor
  • Learn how to develop their individual conducting style

About Martyn Brabbins:
Martyn Brabbins is Music Director of the English National Opera. An inspirational force in British music, Brabbins has had a busy opera career since his early days at the Kirov and more recently at La Scala, the Bayerische Staatsoper, and regularly in Lyon, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Antwerp. He is a popular figure at the BBC Proms and with most of the leading British orchestras, and regularly visits top international orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony. He is currently Visiting Professor at the Royal College of Music and Artistic Advisor to the Huddersfield Choral Society alongside his duties at ENO, and has for many years supported professional, student and amateur music-making at the highest level in the UK.
 

Who is this event for?

Anyone who has an interest in developing their conducting technique. You can register for a place as either as an observer or a participating conductor.

Observer places are open to all. Participating conductor places are open to Making Music members and non-members, but priority will be given to members.
 

Ticket prices

  • Conducting participant £150
  • Observer £35

If you’re registering as a participating conductor, please be aware that we will need to check that you’re a member of a Making Music member group before we come back to you to confirm your place. We will then follow this up with an email to ask you for payment of £150.
