Sibelius and Malcolm Arnold

FSO and our conductor Tom Hammond are delighted to be back live to bring you our first concert for over 18 months.

In his early tone poem En Saga (‘A fairy tale’) Sibelius began to establish a characteristic Finnish musical style with the driving rhythms and rich sonorities which soon became his hallmark.  The later Fifth Symphony, one of his most popular, begins tentatively and has moments of mystery and majesty before culminating in the famous ‘flight of swans’ finale.

Sir Malcolm Arnold was a leading British composer in the second half of the 20th century.  His work includes many famous film scores.  His first Flute Concerto, although less than 15 minutes long, includes expansive melodies, biting dissonances and a truly virtuosic solo flute part.  Soloist Clare Childs studied at the Guildhall and the CNSM Conservatoire de Paris and has played with the major London orchestras including tours of the USA, Asia and Europe and the BBC Proms.

FSO is grateful to the Malcolm Arnold Trust for their support of this concert.

Patrons are encouraged to wear face coverings during the performance.
