Living Heritage in the UK (online event)

About the event:

In 2024, the UK joined many countries in supporting the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Convention looks at ICH - or Living Heritage as it is being called in the UK - which is cultural heritage that is living and practised. Performing Arts is one of the categories and examples in the UK include bell-ringing, cèilidh, Eisteddfod, Lambeg drumming, wassailing and more modern expressions like carnival drumming.

As the first step in supporting these practices, the UK is setting up inventories of cultural heritage; four separate inventories for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland which will combine into one for the whole UK. Making Music is keen to encourage all practitioners and representatives of music making practices to put these forward for listing. Submissions should be made by those who take part in the practice (or a body that represents them), so if you play or sing music you would consider to be part of our living cultural heritage, you can get involved. Submissions are open now and until March 27th. Have a look at the website for information on the process and to see Expressions of Interest already submitted: Welcome | Inventories of Living Heritage in the UK

At this event, we’ll hear more about what is considered Living Heritage, and the process of making a submission to the inventory. Our guest speaker will be Steve Byrne from Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland (TRACS), one of the Community Support Hubs guiding through the inventory process. As well as representing living heritage practises, TRACS have been connecting with the UK Government and UNESCO for many years on ICH safeguarding, and TRACS is a UNESCO-accredited NGO (non-governmental organisation) for Intangible Cultural Heritage. Steve will give some context on why this inventory is so important, and also talk us through the process of making a submission. We’ll consider some of the ethical implications and how to get your community of practitioners involved, so they consent to a submission.

This event is designed for those who represent a living heritage practise. Making Music would like to encourage anyone who thinks their music making should be included to attend and get involved themselves.

We'll talk about:

•    What is Living Heritage?
•    More about the inventory, its purpose and value
•    The process of submitting to the inventory
•    Getting your community of practise involved, and getting community consent to submit
