The William Byrd Singers: Hungarian Connections

Czech out (!) our Hungarian Connections concert at 7.30 on Saturday 25th November at Christ Church, West Didsbury M20 2ZD!

The centrepiece is Kodály's stunning Missa Brevis composed in the cellar of the Budapest Opera House where he took refuge from seven weeks of continuous bombing in 1945.He combined folk-inspired melodies with modal harmonies and a romantic lyricism to unique effect.

His Laudes Organi of 1966 is a fantasia on a seventeenth century sequence. We are also singing his popular and haunting Esti Dal (Evening Song).

Bartók's only choral work with piano is the Four Slovak Folksongs which we shall perform in the original Slovak, demonstrating the catchy and heartfelt melodies set to largely chordal harmonies.

Your feet will be tapping to the drumming of Tambur (Régi Táncdal) based on a melody from 1583 in this setting by Bárdos.

Organ and piano accompaniments and solos will be provided by Stephen Hargreaves. The William Byrd Singers conducted by Keith Orrell look forward to sharing this exciting programme with you.

Tickets cost £10 (£9 concessions, £5 students) at the door or in advance from choir members.
