One of the best loved choral works of the 20th century, Maurice Duruflé’s beautiful Requiem, forms the centrepiece of this concert with Winchester Music Club and the Winchester College choirs. Begun during the Second World War but not completed until 1947, it is based on Gregorian chant, which gives the work a timeless feel. Contrasting with the Requiem are two other works from the middle of the last century: from England, Gerald Finzi’s extended anthem Lo, the full, final sacrifice, and from the USA, Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, composed in 1965 for the Southern Cathedrals Festival.
