No-one knows why Schubert never completed the quartet of which the Quartettsatz was intended as the first movement. But it is a masterpiece on a level with his last three quartets which followed, standing on its own to the listener’s complete satisfaction. Haydn’s G major quartet is the first of the last set of six that he completed and arguably his finest work for string quartet (which is saying something!). Borodin’s second quartet, dedicated to his wife, holds a famous tune in its slow movement, reused (notoriously) for ‘And This is My Beloved’ in the musical Kismet. The rest of the quartet, less celebrated, is however just as delightful.
