Brahms German Requiem
Alnwick and District Choral Society
Alnwick and Distric tChoral Society presents Brahms "Ein Deutsches Requiem".
Brahms German Requiem - Brahms own personal interpretation of the Requiem, using the Lutheran Bible with texts from the Old and New Testament, and from the Apocrypha. It has little in common with the conventional Requiem Mass. Brahms stated intention was to write a Requiem to comfort the living, not one for the souls of the dead. Consequently the work focuses on faith in the Resurrection rather than fear of the Day of Judgement. Despite its unorthodox text, the German Requiem was immediately recognised as a masterpiece of exceptional vision, and it finally confirmed Brahms’ reputation as a composer of international stature.
Alnwick and District Choral Society are directed by Peter Brown, organ accompanient from Alan Gidney. The choir are joined by soloists Veronica Gilbert and Paul Gibson.
