Shostakovich’s Festive Overture is one of his most popular works and was written in only three days! The programme also includes the Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Dukas, which was used so memorably in Walt Disney’s Fantasia and the Symphonic Dances by Rachmaninov, which he called his ‘last spark’ and is filled with backward glances to Russia and his earlier works.
