ELIJAH

Canterbury Cantata Trust

Canterbury Cantata Choir, a small auditioned chamber choir, returns to major choral works with this performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah in February.

This powerful and dramatic  oratorio will be conducted by their director, Emily Renshaw-Kidd, and features local renowned soloists alongside the talents of professional orchestral players in Canterbury Camerata.

The work is clearly influenced by the choral masterpieces of Bach and Handel, but its highly dramatic and operatic style constitutes a significant step forward from its Baroque predecessors. Elijah has many other outstanding qualities: the imaginative orchestration and the sheer beauty of many of the arias and choruses. Above all, there is no mistaking the work’s considerable dramatic impact, epitomised by the vivid characterisation of Elijah himself.

The beautiful church of St Gregory and St Martin in Wye is the venue, a new performance space for Canterbury Cantata.
