Firebird Stravinsky The Firebird Suite (1919)
Nino Rota Bassoon Concerto
Tchaikovsky Symphony No 6 The Pathétique
Richard Laing conductor
Rebecca Eldridge bassoon
Completed in 1977, the film-composer Nino Rota’s bassoon concerto is charm and accessibility personified, thanks to its lyrical themes. It’s preceded by The Firebird – whose thirteen princesses, fabulous firebird and a magic feather feature in Stravinksy’s fantastical ballet; and is followed by the searingly raw emotion of Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique symphony.
Having conducted Chandos on a number of occasions we are pleased to welcome Richard Laing to the Malvern platform again. We are joined by soloist, Rebecca Eldridge, whose playing – in addditon to her solo work – encompasses a number of leading orchestras including WNO; and she has performed on BBC Radio 3 with her chamber group, Aquilon, and at 10 Downing Street.
