The Creation – Celebrating 150 Years of Choral Singing in Cockermouth

In April 1867 a group of civic-minded Cockermouth citizens met to found a new musical society: Cockermouth Harmonic Society.  The first concert took place later that year.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of our creation, Cockermouth Harmonic Society will be performing The Creation, by Joseph Haydn on 8 April 2017, 7.30pm at Christ Church, Cockermouth.

This auspicious occasion will be led by Ian Thompson, the Society’s Musical Director, conducting the choir, soloists Tracey Penwarden, soprano. Alex Banfield, tenor and Brian Bannatyne Scott, bass, and the Lonsdale Baroque Ensemble.

Tickets for the concert will cost £15, but are free for full-time students, and there is a discount for parties of 6 or more.  Tickets are available from Billy Bowman’s music shop in Cockermouth.  Or contact Janet Johnston (telephone 01900 825083 or email: ticketsales@cockermouthharmonic.org.uk) for further information.

Note to Editors: Cockermouth Harmonic Society is the largest adult choir in Cockermouth with some 70 singing members.  The choir performs the major choral repertoire and has a professional musical director and accompanist.

Cockermouth Harmonic Society prepares for at least two major concerts a year.  In addition it performs in Carlisle Cathedral and at other special events.  Soloists and orchestral musicians are regularly engaged to perform at its concerts.

In 2017 Cockermouth Harmonic Society will have been singing for 150 years!  This will make Cockermouth Harmonics one of the oldest choirs in the country. A number of events will take during the year to mark this amazing achievement.
