BRITTEN: A Ceremony of Carols

POULENC: Quatre motets pour le temps de Noël

Various seasonal pieces - join us in singing some carols towards the end of the evening.

Harpist: Gabriella Jones, Musical Director: Phiroz Dalal

Britten's Ceremony of Carols: This work was originally written for children’s chorus and harp, though Britten published a version for a mixed chorus shortly after its initial publication. He wrote the work during a sea voyage from America to Britain in 1942. The poems set in the work are related to Christmas and written in Middle English, dating from medieval times.

Poulenc’s Christmas motets, composed in 1952, are a joyful celebration of the events of the Christmas story. Enjoy the dissonant textures paired with sensuous harmonies.
