A Celebration of Britain
Finchley Symphony Orchestra
Our concert conducted by our Music Director Christopher Stark features three popular pieces by British composers each with a strongly British, but very different, flavour.
Much the best known work by Hamish MacCunn, The Land of the Mountain and the Flood - written when he was still a teenager - paints a lyrical picture of the wild Scottish landscape.
Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings is a unique composition showing extraordinary creativity in settings of six poems by English poets and calling for great virtuosity from both the singer and the horn soloist. Tackling this with us will be Ruairi Bowen (tenor) and Mark Bennett (horn).
Vaughan Williams’ fifth symphony although, like the Britten, dating from the second world war, could hardly be more serene and unwarlike. It rapidly became a favourite and was highly praised by its dedicatee, Sibelius.
