Chichester Psalms

Hampstead Chamber Choir

A programme of  joyous, expressive, and spiritual music from the 19th and 20th centuries featuring Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Kodály’s Missa Brevis and Janáček’s Otčenáš.
Chichester Psalms, written in 1965 and sung in Hebrew, is a jazzy, thrilling, and beautifully melodic arrangement for chorus, organ, harp and percussion with a haunting solo for boy soprano.
The Janáček, Otčenáš of 1906 is a setting in Czech of the Lord’s Prayer in six short sections. With the accompaniment of organ and harp, it alternates between chorus and tenor solo.
Kodály's Missa Brevis, had its first performance during the siege of Budapest in the winter of 1944/45 in the cellar cloakrooms of the Budapest Opera House.  It is  sung in Latin with organ accompaniment. We will perform it in Rosslyn Hill Chapel - upstairs!
