Leatherhead Choral Society

Leatherhead Choral Society (LCS) is a friendly and sociable non-auditioned choir of around 70 singers. LCS was founded in 1928 - when towns were first admitted to the famous Leith Hill Musical Festival in Dorking - and they have taken part in the Festival every year since then, winning their division six times in the last ten years. In addition to singing in the Festival, they stage two major concerts a year. The choir also runs a varied programme of social activities, vocal workshops and recordings.

Under the baton of Ian Assersohn LCS has blossomed, extending their repertoire beyond the classical European tradition to include music inspired by singing traditions around the world. Recent works performed include Verdi Requiem, Bach Jesu, meine Freude, John Rutter Requiem, Britten A Ceremony of Carols, Alexander L’Estrange Zimbe! as well as many works by Ian Assersohn, including A Drop o Nelson’s Blood and Songs of Catullus. In 2016 LCS co-commissioned Ian to write Dies Irae, a large-scale cantata for three choirs and orchestra. This work was premiered to a full-house in Dorking Halls where we were joined on stage by Epsom Male Voice Choir, Farnham Youth Junior Choir and Camerata of London.

LCS rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7.45 to 9.45pm at Leatherhead Methodist Church , Church Road, Leatherhead KT22 8AY. New members are always welcome!
